Two marketers are lost in the desert. One says,
"Don't worry, I'll create a lead magnet to attract rescue helicopters."
The other replies,
"Great, but what's our nurture sequence if they don't convert to actual rescue?"
It might make you chuckle this morningā¦
We have another great resource from Harry, who offers 35 ways to handle and get the most out of your job hunt.
Thanks for reading again this week and have a great weekend (cheering on the Lionesses on Sunday š“ó §ó ¢ó „ó ®ó §ó æā½ļø)!

35 Things To Make You Look, Feel & Be More Productive While You Look For Your Next Job

35Ā Things To Make YouĀ Look, Feel & BeĀ MoreĀ ProductiveĀ WhileĀ YouĀ FindĀ YourĀ Next Job
A/ The TopĀ 8Ā UsefulĀ Things IĀ Realised WhileĀ Job Seeking
1.Ā Losing your job takes you through a whole holiday of travel experiences:- one day you're flying, then the worst happens and you're treading water. You try desperately to stay afloat, butĀ fear,Ā lack of confidenceĀ andĀ fiscal fearĀ dragsĀ you underĀ -Ā which eventually migrates into drowning.Ā No matter how strong you are, youāll have days when you canāt see the surface, but you CAN swim back up there.
2.Ā Time is your friend dressed up as your enemy. Waking up with that feeling of dread, watching your bank account tick backwards, spending hours scrolling jobs you wouldĀ neverĀ have considered until your back was against the wall, tick tock, tick tockā¦Ā Flip it on its head ā when was the last time you actually had ātimeā? Itās a blessing ā a majestic and precious resource, and itās FREE!Ā Use it productively, waste it, sleep through it, exercise with it ā itās yours, itās wonderful and it wonāt be here forever.
3.Ā Donāt get annoyed with recruiters and talent teams ā remember, if you think the market is treating you badly, itāsĀ justĀ as bad for them, if not worse.Ā Dissing them will just get you on theirĀ Blacklists. So donāt fire off angry emails and posts when things donāt go your way or you get ghosted. Write them if it makes you feel better, sure ā just donāt hit sendĀ as youāll need those bridges one day. If nothing else in here is useful, youāll thank me for this advice down the line.
4.Ā Make a game of job seekingĀ āĀ one hour of job seeking, one networking meeting or one solid application is one point, good for a long walk to a waterside pub. A decent interviewĀ or positive feedback isĀ threeĀ points, which equates to a steak dinner. Get to ten points? Well, thatās a night out, for sure.Ā New job = holiday.Ā Itās a miserable process and it can take a looong time (trust me) soĀ why not own it andĀ make itĀ fun?
5.Ā The job market is in flux, so why not pivot with it?Ā The economy is in meltdown, AI isĀ apparentlyĀ the cause ofĀ -Ā andĀ theĀ answer toĀ -Ā all of lifeās problems (Chapeau, Simpsons). Ageism is rife,Ā JDās change, thousands of applicants auto applyĀ to hundredsĀ ofĀ soulless Ā ATS systems, professional courtesyĀ is a long forgotten myth and everything sucks. Perhaps NOW is the time to step away from the career you never really enjoyed andĀ do that thing youāre good at, youāre passionate about and youād excel in? You know as well as I do that youād beĀ AMAZINGĀ doingĀ that thing you love, so if not now, then when?
6.Ā When youāre waiting to hear news, the silence is DEAFENING. And yes, you feel powerless half the time, butĀ itāsĀ like dating:- you need to create a desirable, confidentand differentiated public persona which looks attractive and reliable toĀ businesses.Ā In your head, pretend you already have a job offer in hand,Ā grill the interviewersĀ hard on the key elements of the role and business. Make themĀ desire you so theyĀ want to chase you above the hundreds of other lookalike candidates.Ā
7.Ā Nobody really cares ā I mean, of course,Ā someĀ people care ā they care how you are, but donāt imagine everyone is out there doing the work for you ā thatās on you. Grit your teeth, swat away the inevitable disappointmentsĀ andĀ self-doubt, celebrate the wins no matter how trivial and embrace the fact that when you get to where youāre going, itāll be down to YOU, because YOU refused to eat sh*t lying down
8.Ā YourĀ self-confidenceĀ and self worth will both take a hit, no matter howĀ bulletproof you think you are. Desperation, apathy and ghosting gets us all, eventually. You wonder what you need to do, whatĀ youāveĀ done wrong, why nothing is happening, whether you need to pivot into plumbing and more. Itās natural, itās painful and itās inevitable, so donāt think youāre special, weak orĀ alone. Youāre not.Ā
9.Ā Compromise isnāt the same as failure.Ā
10.Ā The world is moving fast, especially for us marketers, and upskillingĀ is more essential than ever. With all this wonderful timeĀ (and a newly polished CV to fluff)Ā find new things to become an expert in. I leant into AI,Ā creating images, data analysis skills andĀ had a go at building agents. I focused on improving my writing, both by reading and writing every day. Then I took up metal detecting ā not marketing related, you mightĀ think, butĀ optimising my ownĀ TikTok channelĀ certainly is.Ā Ā Ā
B/ Look After Number 1
As the SnickersĀ X TinderĀ partnership headline wouldĀ sayĀ (if it existed):-Ā āYouāre not you when youāre desperateā
1.Ā Exercise ā nothing will pull you out of a funk better than serotonin with a shot of fresh air
2.Ā Read āĀ self-improvementĀ and learning is one route, but use all this wonderful free time to read those books youāve been too tired to get into
3.Ā Enjoy Yourself ā They say you canāt hurry love, and you canāt hurry a job search, either.Ā So,Ā while you wait for a you-shaped role to emerge in this calamitous market, catch up with the friends youāve ghosted when your career was going terribly well rather than terribly badly
4.Ā Sleep ā itās a wonder drug (one Iāve suffered cold turkey withdrawal from whilst job seeking), so get to bed early, wakeĀ fresh, keep the coffee intake reasonable and let your brain switch off properly
5.Ā Book in a mental health MOT ā therapy, rest, acceptance and self-realisationĀ arenāt woolly buzz words ā they can beĀ solutions. Your mind is an engine ā service it regularly Ā
C/ Weaponise Your Job SearchĀ
1.Ā Tailor your CV and cover letter for everyĀ job you go for. In this horror show market,Ā one perfect application has a better hit rate than 1,000 generic Hail Marys
2.Ā Donāt burn time ā you can search and apply forĀ all relevant jobs in the first 1-2 hours of the day. There are no prizes for doing an 8 hour shift, so get theĀ grunt work done then move onto more productive things (see section A)
3.Ā Recruiters and Headhunters arenātĀ wizards ā they canāt magic roles from thin air. Some are more communicative, others have higher EQ, many will ghost you for lack of anythingĀ worth discussing.Ā Build relationships with them but only as one part of a wider strategy.
4.Ā Focus onĀ LinkedInĀ Jobs, recruiters and, crucially,Ā your network. The non-advertised roles your professional contacts know about (and can vouch for you on) are the hidden gold. You can read a comprehensive guide to customising a more effective approach in thisĀ Marketing Unfiltered article)
5.Ā You donāt get any presents by hosting a pity party ā get overĀ those naggingĀ fears and āwoe is meāĀ thoughtsĀ asafp ā theyāre valid, sure, but about as useful asĀ pastry pants.Ā
D/Ā Magnify Your Personal Brand
1.Ā People canāt hire you if they donāt know about you.Ā AmplifyĀ yourself.
2.Ā This could be on LinkedInĀ -Ā comment as much as you postĀ if you wantĀ maximumĀ reach and engagement. ThisĀ MUĀ articleĀ summarisedĀ the findings ofĀ an experiment I ran aboutĀ what tickles the LI algoĀ off the back of a viral post
3.Ā Write,Ā speak, rinse, repeat ā say yes to any and all PR opps whether they be Podcasts, article quotes, writing or conference speaking. Even if you find this stuff hard, itās free andĀ if nothing else is good fodder for your CV and profile
4.Ā Get a new LI headshot ā you donāt have to pay forĀ it;Ā just get the best high res photo you have and use AI to optimise it. Then redesign your LI header image toĀ say exactly whoĀ youĀ are and how amazing you are ā itās a massive billboard and itās free ā but I bet youāre notĀ exploiting it
5.Ā Keep in touch with recruiters so youāre top of mind. I send an email monthlyĀ which feels like the Goldilocks frequency, and I write personalĀ updatesĀ for each recruiterĀ with amusing stories about my job search, hobbies and PR wins just so my email is a tinyĀ bit more memorable than the other hundred desperate generic candidate notes theyāll get that dayĀ
E/Ā Donāt Give Up, Give Back
1.Ā TheĀ annoyingĀ truthĀ is thatĀ the job market isĀ crap,Ā and it might take you a while to get employed again. Get over that fact nowĀ and do something positive instead
2.Ā Rather thanĀ whipping yourself with metaphoricalĀ birch twigs,Ā you could use your oodles of experience toĀ mentor younger folks in your line of work
3.Ā This isnātĀ an entirely selfless act ā while theyāll benefit from your objective advice and knowledge, youāll extend goodwill in new and hitherto unexplored directions
4.Ā ChancesĀ areĀ professional bodies in your industry have mechanisms for mentorship in place already
5.Ā So,Ā lean into self-improvement by helping others improve themselves
F/Ā Money, Money, Money
1.Ā We might say weĀ love work, but none of us would show up if we werenāt paid to do so. If youāre not working, you can use all this wonderful free time to mitigate spending. Youāll not only extend your runway but also set yourself up to be more cash efficient when that lovely salary does start rolling in again.
2.Ā Review your direct debitsĀ ā cancelling a couple of TV channels and subscriptions can rapidly add up toĀ Hundred $Ā in savings every month
3.Ā Renegotiate standing orders ā IĀ betĀ you can getĀ wayĀ better dealsĀ on yourĀ mobileĀ and utilityĀ bills
4.Ā Shop clever ā I lean into LIDL, ALDI and TK Maxx anyway. If you likeĀ steak andĀ wine, there are some corkers to be had in theĀ value supermarketĀ meat, vegĀ andĀ wine aisles, too.Ā Are you aĀ curryĀ fan? Great! Now, finally,Ā you haveĀ theĀ time to masterĀ theĀ DishoomĀ cookbookĀ cover to cover
5.Ā Gamify yourĀ frugality. Set yourself a challenge ā see if you can find Ā£500 in monthly savings in the next week and if you manage it, treat yourselfĀ to a date night. Youāll still be 400 quid in credit, and youāll be happier, too
I genuinely believeĀ that how you handle yourself when things are shit is the true reflection of how far you've come, and the person you really are.Ā Being unemployedĀ canĀ make youĀ feel like a failure, butĀ it absolutely, unequivocally shouldnāt. In a modern marketing career,Ā itās asĀ common as aĀ typo in a CRMĀ emailĀ or an ill-advised social post,Ā so stop beating yourself up, recognise itās simply a product of circumstance and soon enoughĀ youāll be stuck inĀ a meeting, dreaming of the days you spent your mornings sat in your PJs, crafting AI enhanced cover letters to appease thankless ATS Gods.
Then again, maybe notā¦

5 Takeaways From Last Weekās MU Article
The 5 takeaways from Harryās take on Clarksonās Hawkstone beer ad MU38. Ā
Provocative: Jeremy Clarksonās new Hawkstone beer ad was intentionally provocative and ādesigned to be banned,ā leveraging controversy and his fame for viral PR rather than traditional advertising.
Virality > Paid: The ad mimics tactics used by brands like Paddy Power, aiming for social media virality and press coverage instead of paid media, with the ASAās slow response used as a PR tool.
Clarksonās Army: Clarksonās massive, loyal following amplifies his stunts, making risky, irreverent marketing effective for him; this approach is an important lesson, as it would likely fail for less famous brands.
Risky: The adās controversy creates headaches for marketers, as CEOs may pressure teams to replicate viral success without understanding the unique context or risks.
Booze Boost? While Clarksonās business ventures are successful and boost local economies, the marketing style is divisive and arguably irresponsible, especially for alcohol brands.
The CMO Takeaway:
Controversy and fame can drive viral marketing, but this playbook only works if you have a megaphone and a character larger than life like Clarkson.
Most brands should focus on their own lane and their approach, not manufactured outrage.
